Centennial Book Project

Help us preserve the story of Rutherford House and
share your memories with us today!

The year 2011 marks the centenary of Rutherford House as a fixture in the Garneau Community, the University of Alberta campus, and the city of Edmonton. The house has taken on many roles, from its origin as Achnacarry, the home of Alberta's first premier, Alexander Cameron Rutherford and his family, to the Delta Upsilon fraternity house to its present incarnation as the Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site operated by the Government of Alberta, and the Arbour Restaurant and Whatnot Gift Shop operated by the Friends of Rutherford House Society. In both the past and the present, Rutherford House and its grounds have been imbued with diverse meanings and memories. But why is Rutherford House important? Who cares about this home, and why?

The Friends of Rutherford House Society’s Centennial Book Project will explore the significance of Rutherford House and its grounds to the community of Edmonton over the past one hundred years in order to understand what role Rutherford House might play for future generations, and ultimately ask how heritage serves a community.
